‘American Hustle’ Reunites Old Friends

I got a text from my brother yesterday, and all it said was, “American hustle trailer.” Anticipating films is serious business in my family.

But we’ve been anticipating this one with more excitement than usual. It is directed by David O. Russell, who also helmed The Fighter in 2010 and Silver Linings Playbook in 2012. Both movies were critically and commercially successful and gave us riveting (and Academy Award-winning) character performances such as Christian Bale’s crack cocaine addict, Dicky and Jennifer Lawrence’s feisty widow, Tiffany. Both films were rooted in the personality and growth of its characters, focusing on the relationships that shape us. They are deeply beautiful films.

Enter American Hustle, which is not just directed by Russell, but also stars four actors from his previous two films–not only Lawrence and Bale, but also Bradley Cooper (of Silver Linings Playbook) and Amy Adams (of The Fighter). Throw in Jeremy Renner, and you’ve got an insanely all-star cast. Take a look:

Bradley Cooper’s fro! Amy Adams’ boobs! Jennifer Lawrence getting her ass playing like a drum! Set in the late 70’s and early 80’s, this film looks seedy from the setting to the hair. Everyone will see this film. It’s going to be phenomenal.

As a final note, I just want to clarify that while Jennifer Lawrence charmed her way into the hearts of America last year (in The Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook and her adorably awkward interviews), she existed in the hearts of my brother and me way back when we saw Winter’s Bone in 2010. The girl existed before she played Katniss, and anyone who claims to love her should check her first film out immediately. That is all.
