First Look: New Girl

It’s getting to be that time again. The summer shows are wrapping up, and now that last week in September is upon us and trailers for premieres are everywhere. The new and old alike are promoting themselves with countless trailers, behind-the-scenes videos, and sneak peaks. Get ready kids, it’s about to be very busy in the TV world.

There is a race in late September and early October to see which network is going to have the hottest new show. Will it be on of the Mad Men ripoffs, The Playboy Club or Pan AM? Will it be one of the chick shows (Whitney and 2 Broke Girls) that seem to be trying to bring back the sitcom format? Will it be that show (Apartment 23) where James van de Beek plays himself? Only time will tell, I guess.

But Fox is jumping the gun and trying to win the race before premieres even start! In an attempt to put the other networks out of the running, Fox put the pilot of it’s premiering show New Girl on iTunes. For free.

For Free, people.

Let’s take a look at the trailer:

OK, so it’s classic Zooey Deschanel. The girl loves her crazy and whimsical. New Girl‘s Jess seems to be a little over the top though, even for her. All of the clips from the trailer are taken directly from the pilot, so who knows what’s beyond “the move in” episode.

My first reaction is, wow, that’s a whole lot of crazy stuffed into 22 minutes. It’s almost uncomfortably crazy. Most of the things Zooey’s Jess does just make you cringe like her three male roommates. It’s not exactly funny yet. You can see where it could be, but the moments are few in this first episode. One of the good moments is the “Douchebag Jar” they keep for whenever shirtless roommate (Schmidt) says something particularly awful.

It’s hard to cram dynamic and chemistry into one episode, and while this pilot does not succeed in making this a must-watch show for me, I will tune in to see if the potential I saw pans out. So for that, well done Fox.

At the first least, you should all download it too, because it’s FREE.
